- アメリカの大学・大学院に在籍する留学生総数 1,177,766 人（前年比 4.5 ％増、全米大学生数の 6.1 ％）
- アジアからの留学生 842,885 人（留学生の71.6％、国別留学生数の上位10位の半数以上を占める）

4．留学資金財源
留学生全体を見ると5割以上の人が、大学学部課程に在籍する留学生に至っては、8割以上が自己（家族）資金でアメリカ留学に必要な経費を賄っていることがわかります（Open Doors 2025参照 ）。アメリカ留学に必要な経費に関しては「 経済力 」を参照してください。
アメリカの大学における留学生の動向 - B 日本人留学生の動向
1. 日本人留学生の構成比（2024-25年）
・日本人留学生総数 13,814人（前年比 1.0％減、全米の留学生総数の1.2％、国別では第12位）
・学位レベル 大学学部：45.8%、大学院：19.9% 、Non-Degree（学位を取得しない）：23.3%、OPT：11.1％
・教育機関のタイプ別割合：Associate's Colleges 15.7 %, Baccalaureate Colleges 7.3%, Doctoral Universities 62.3%, Master's Colleges and Universities 13.7%, Special Focus Institutions 1.0%
・日本人の多い州：カリフォルニア州、ニューヨーク州、ワシントン州、ハワイ州、マサチューセッツ州

日本人留学生は、ほかのアジアからの留学生と同様、1980年代半ばから急増し、 5年間でおよそ3倍になり、その後十数年間、日本人留学生の数に大きな変動はありませんでした。国別順位では1994～1997年度まで第1位を維持しました。その後、中国やインドからの留学生が増加したことで、1998～1999年度は第2位、2000年度は第3位、2001～2007年度は第4位となりました。続いて、2008年度は第5位、2009年度は第6位、2010～2013年度は第7位、2014年度は第8位、2015年度は第9位、2016～2019年度は再び第8位となりました。さらに、2020～2021年度は第11位、2022年度は第8位、2023年度は第13位、2024年度は第12位と推移しています。 ［ 日本人留学生数の変遷 1954-2024 (出典：Open Doors, IIE、日米教育委員会まとめ）］
近年の日本人留学生の特徴としては、1）大学学部に留学する学生が大学院に留学する学生よりも多いことと、2）non-degree（学位を取得しない）で留学する学生が一定数いることがあげられます。
日本人留学生は、大学学部課程で学ぶ割合が45.8％と大学院に留学している日本人（19.9%）を大きく上回っています。
